Establishing a power of attorney
A power of attorney is a written document that gives a person the authority to act on another's behalf for any legal or financial issues for a specified time. Designating your spouse, parent, or trusted friend in a power of attorney allows them to address whatever needs to be done on your behalf while you're away. You can tailor your powers of attorney for any situation.
If you’re married and both you and your spouse are in the military, each of you may want to establish a power of attorney prior to deployment. Help is available at most installation legal assistance offices.
If you establish a power of attorney, please send us a copy for our files. Make sure your authorized contact has your Social Security number, account information, and date of birth so they can act on your behalf.

Protecting your credit with an active duty alert
To help you maintain your good credit, you may want to place an active duty alert on your credit report to reduce the risk of identity theft. An active duty alert requires businesses to take extra steps before granting credit in your name.
Note: active duty alerts last for one year and can be renewed to match the period of deployment.
If you have questions about your credit, visit www.usa.gov/credit-reports. You can also order your credit report online from AnnualCreditReport.com, call 877-322-8228, or write to Annual Credit Report Request Service, P.O. Box 105281, Atlanta GA 30348-5281.
